DIY Soundproofing: A 101 Guide

Here’s something you probably didn’t know: you don’t have to be a qualified acoustician (i.e. an expert in sound science) to be able to properly soundproof your space.

DIY soundproofing is easier than you might think, no matter whether you’re optimising your home, your office, a home theatre, a recording studio, or anywhere else where unwanted sound intrusions can become a mortal enemy. More often than not, all you need is a good plan and the right soundproofing products to be able to turn your space into a quiet haven.

At Soundproof Warehouse, we know everything about proper sound insulation and protection, so take it from us that one of the best pieces of equipment you can use for your own DIY soundproofing projects is the Sound-Stop 5: an easy-to-apply and amazingly heavy-duty vinyl material that you can apply on your own.

In this guide, we’ll explore the benefits of using this easy vinyl for your home projects, and provide a step-by-step installation overview to help you get started on your very own do-it-yourself soundproofing dreams.

Using the Sound-Stop 5 for DIY soundproofing: what are the benefits?

Multi-purpose usage

Without a doubt, the best part of Sound-Stop 5 is its easy versatility for at-home projects. Its flexibility means that it can adapt to different spaces and work effectively on walls, floors, and ceilings, providing consistent noise reduction across a wide range of home environments.

Easy to cut and apply

Made of high-temperature fused vinyl with no barium, Sound-Stop 5 can be easily cut with a standard Stanley knife, allowing you to customise it to fit any space perfectly even if you don’t have much DIY experience.

Heavy-duty design

While a roll of Sound-Stop 5 vinyl can be pretty heavy on its own (we recommend buying one with a roll of Super-Grip tape, and three tubes of Fuller Fire sound acoustic sealant for every four rolls of the product to be able to be used best), this also means that you can trust how powerfully the Sound-Stop 5 blocks out noise, reducing sound transmission by up to 27dB.

Perfect for layering

With its slim, mass-loaded design, it’s easy to add multiple layers of Sound-Stop 5 to greatly increase its sound-blocking capabilities and customise the level of soundproofing that you need for your specific project.

Great physical resistance

Sound-Stop 5 is designed to withstand extreme conditions, with a temperature resistance range from -20°C to 90°C (which means that you can apply it virtually anywhere, whether inside or outside) and a tensile strength of 400 PSI (which means that it won’t get damaged easily).

How to install Sound-Stop 5 vinyl

Installing Sound-Stop 5 is so easy that can be done by yourself and with no special skills required:

Preparation: Start by thoroughly cleaning and drying the installation surface to prepare it for installation. Unroll a length of Sound-Stop 5 and measure it against the area that you’re planning to cover. Then, using a Stanley knife, cut the material to the required size while making sure that the ends are square.

Securing and sealing: Place the cut vinyl against the surface and use Super-Grip tape along the edges to secure it firmly in place. Then, apply Fuller Fire acoustic sealant around all edges, seams, and any other openings to ensure an airtight seal.

Layering: For enhanced sound-blocking, you can layer sheets of Sound-Stop 5 between sheets of plasterboard to significantly boost its noise-reduction capabilities.

Final inspection: After the installation is complete, take a look at the total area of the vinyl and fill any unsealed gaps or edges with acoustic sealant to maintain the integrity of the soundproofing.
